If you have a young child who struggles with tantrums, defiance, or difficulty following directions, you've probably tried everything including advice from guru Dr. Becky Kennedy. And yet the meltdowns keep coming and you are TIRED.

You're not failing as a parent and you may just need a specialized approach.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, or PCIT, is one of the most well-researched treatments available for young children with behavioral challenges, and it's now available at In View Counseling in Fairfax, VA.

What Is PCIT?

PCIT is an evidence-based therapy for children ages 2 to 7 who are struggling with behavioral and emotional challenges. What makes it unique is that it doesn't just work with the child, but it works with you, the parent, as the most powerful agent of change in your child's life.

The goal is twofold: to strengthen the relationship between you and your child, and to give you practical tools to manage challenging behavior with confidence and calm.

How Does It Work?

First, you are in the room with your child.

Instead of being in the waiting area, you and your child are in the therapy room together playing and interacting while your therapist coaches you live. You get real-time feedback while you're actually parenting, not an hour later when the moment has passed.

PCIT has two phases:

Phase 1 — Building the Relationship (CDI): Your child leads the play and you follow. You learn skills to build warmth, connection, and positive communication. Things like praising specifically, describing what your child is doing, and following their lead, are all taught. This phase is about filling your child's emotional cup.

Phase 2 — Building Cooperation (PDI): Once those skills within the relationship are stronger, the focus shifts to helping your child follow directions. You learn how to give clear instructions and follow through calmly and consistently without escalating.

What Can PCIT Help With?

  • Tantrums and meltdowns

  • Defiance and not following directions

  • Aggression like hitting, biting, throwing

  • Hyperactivity and impulsivity

  • Anxiety-driven behaviors and trauma responses

  • Big life transitions like divorce or a new sibling

Does It Work?

Yes, and the research is strong. A 2025 systematic review published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine analyzed over a decade of PCIT studies and found consistent, significant reductions in child behavior problems across diverse families and settings. (Read the study here)

Beyond behavior, PCIT also reduces parenting stress and builds confidence and those gains tend to last long after treatment ends.

Most families complete PCIT in 14 to 20 weekly sessions, and many notice meaningful changes within the first few weeks.
